Milestone celebrations for a teen during Coronavirus has not been without its challenges. Our neighbor, Jes’s daughter was supposed to have a banner year. Brooklynne was celebrating her eighteenth birthday. This was also her senior year of high school. Who would have imagined that 2020 would unfold with a pandemic?
Stay-at-home orders dictated milestone celebrations for a teen during Coronavirus. Seniors had to remain socially distanced. Virtual learning became the norm. And wearing masks was required. How then do you commemorate a teen’s major life events?
Thinking Outside the Box
Brooklynne turned eighteen in May. Her mom wanted to surprise her with a special day. We were quarantined so socialization was out of the question. However, Jes was determined to make these milestone celebrations for a teen during Coronavirus a memorable one.
Brooklynne’s surprise 18th birthday required careful planning. Jes asked her friends and family for suggestions. Everyone offered unique ideas, and the event came to fruition.
The Big Event
Brook’s 18th birthday was celebrated with a surprise social distanced parade. Our local fire department kicked off the event with a drive-by. A caravan of cars, a pick-up truck with a flatbed, and a DJ offered other highlights.
Each car offered their slant to how they would honor the birthday girl. There were balloons, signs, and crazy string. Brooklynne soaked in every moment.
A Senior’s Celebration
Brooklynne’s senior year of high school was not what she imagined. There would be no pomp and circumstance. But Brook’s mom made it memorable for her senior.
There were many mini-celebrations during the pandemic. I shot several senior photo sessions as a way to give back.
Graduates paraded down Broadway to make up for the ceremony they would not have.
Brooklynne’s senior year culminated with a socially distanced backyard feast. The fireworks were the perfect way to punctuate a year that will go down in history.
Final Thoughts
Milestone celebrations for a teen during Coronavirus was a challenge. However, seniors stepped up and tackled the changes head on.
My thoughts are with all students as we enter a new school year. Children are resilient. I have no doubt that they will overcome all obstacles and rise to the challenge.
