This memorable senior photography experience was unique because Alexis is someone I’ve known since she was a young child. When I learned that she was graduating high school, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate her milestone than with this memorable senior photography experience.
Building Friendships
Alexis’ mom, Sharon, and I were colleagues with the Department of Education. We developed a strong friendship, a bond that has spanned over fifteen years. Although we don’t see each other often, when we do get together, we don’t skip a beat.
Alexis is a special young lady. One summer, Sharon and her kids spent a weekend in our home. Afterward, I received a three page thank you letter from Alexis. I recently mentioned the letter to Sharon, who said, “it was all her idea.” That letter still hangs on my bulletin board.
Reunion
It was the evening of the shoot. I was so excited to see Sharon and her kids after not seeing them in over a year. When Sharon’s son, Aahron, stepped out of the car, I couldn’t believe how tall he’d gotten. It touched my heart to see them all.
I wanted so much to hug them, but Coronavirus still dictates how we interact with each other. Alexis wanted her grandmother to be part of the photoshoot, so a senior photography experience turned into a generational family session.
The Photography Experience
I scouted several locations in the park before the family arrived. It wasn’t very reassuring to see so many people around. So, I quickly found another area that was less crowded and which Grandma Pearl could navigate.
Part of my session generally includes walking while I yell out prompts. It’s a way to get candid shots and natural smiles.
We then moved to another location in the park. With nightfall quickly upon us, I had to search for light. As we soon learned, the spot I chose was not the ideal location. Since this was a walkway, we had to contend with the drove of people leaving the park and the mosquitos had arrived. But, in spite of that, we made it work.
I was touched when Sharon pulled out this photo of her recently deceased father. What a beautiful moment. He was there in spirit sharing in Alexis’ milestone.
Final Thoughts
This memorable senior photography experience will forever hold a special place in my heart. This was a tough year for all high school seniors. As Alexis enters college life, I know the events of her final year will only make her stronger. I wish her all the best in her exciting new journey.
