Interview With an Exceptional Professional Massage Therapist

Laurel Camacho is an exceptional professional massage therapist at Classical Concepts Salon and Spa in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. I was interested in learning about her profession, and she agreed to an interview.

MFP: How did the idea of becoming a massage therapist come about?

LC: I always wanted to help people. I started in social work. Although social work is important work, it was not for me. Instead, I decided I wanted to help people physically and mentally. That was when I chose to specialize in relaxing and therapeutic massages. 

MFP: How did you learn about classical concepts?

LC: I went there as a client. One of my friends worked there and said they were looking for a massage therapist. She suggested I apply, and since I was already in the field, it was perfect. I will be celebrating my 15th anniversary on September 10, 2020

MFP: How many hours a day do you work on average?

LC: My schedule varies. I’m lucky I can tailor it around my kids’ school schedule. 

MFP: Can you describe your typical day?

LC: When I arrive at work, I set up the massage room. I check my schedule for the day. This ritual is essential, so I know how to prepare for frequent or new clientele. My goal is to provide an excellent massage. When my guests arrive, I greet them at the door. Upon entering the massage room, I explain what I will be doing and go over all the safety protocols. In between visits, I sanitize all hard surfaces entirely, launder linen, and fill up the essential oils used throughout my massages.

MFP: What motivates you?

LC: My guests are what motivate me. It gives me great pleasure to help them overcome their pain. It’s rewarding to bring joy and relaxation to their day, even if it’s just one hour. 

MFP: How do you relax?

LC: I enjoy reading, coloring, and stretching exercises. 

MFP: What piece of advice would you give to college graduates who want to become massage therapists?

LC: You have to love what you do. You have to want to help people. If you’re happy in what you do, that is success unto itself. 

MFP: If you had the chance to start your career again, what would you do differently?

LC: I don’t think I would do anything differently. I’m happy with where I am at this point in my life.

MFP: If you had one wish, what would you would change in the world?

LC: I wish that people could have more compassion for themselves and others.
