Backstory
This mother-daughter portrait experience was more than just a typical photo shoot. It all started when I photographed my daughter-in-law, Laurel, as part of my 40 Women Over 40 campaign. After that successful shoot, I proposed the idea of a mother-daughter portrait session, which she couldn’t resist.
A Milestone
Sophia has been my muse for years, and watching her bloom through my lens has been a privilege. As she prepared to begin her journey as a college freshman, this mother-daughter portrait experience was the perfect way to mark this milestone moment in her life.
Pre- Photoshoot
The day of the photoshoot was filled with excitement, but also with the anticipation of meeting our new hair and makeup artist, Jessica. As a team, we work together to ensure that our clients receive the best possible experience. Jessica arrived early to set up, and we immediately knew we were a great fit.
This photoshoot was a significant for many reasons, including my decision to hire an assistant. As I opened the door to greet Amy, I was surprised to see her mother videotaping the moment. It turns out that this was her 15-year-old daughter’s first job, and her mother wanted to capture this special moment.
As the shoot progressed, Amy quickly proved to be an invaluable addition to the team. She helped with lighting, equipment, and even assisted with styling. Her enthusiasm and willingness to learn made the day run smoothly and efficiently.
The Photoshoot
As expected, Laurel and Sophia arrived on time. My hair and makeup artist, Jessica was ready to begin. Laurel was first. Jess was so easy going, would explain each step of the process, and she and Laurel immediately connected.
In the meantime, Sophia and I went through her wardrobe. Sometimes we go to Amazon for a quick order of some new outfit for the shoot. But, this time we decided to use what we mined from our closets. The choices were simple, a summer dress and casual wear.
When Jessica finished with Laurel, it was Sophia’s turn.
“Photographing the love between a mother
and her daughter is priceless.”
As Jessica worked on Sophia’s hair and makeup, Laurel stepped in front of the camera. I captured her in a beautiful and classy red dress, which was not her usual style. However, she embraced the moment and allowed me to capture a side of her that she doesn’t normally display.
Mother Daughter Portrait Time!
After I photographed Laurel, we moved into the mother-daughter portraits. Guiding them through various poses, I captured their love and connection through the lens of my camera. There were moments of laughter and warmth, as they shared this experience together.
Final Thoughts
Through the art of photography, I was able to capture the bond between a mother and her daughter. As we wrapped up the shoot, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to create images to heirlooms.
